That writing is one of the most tricky ways of generating stimuli in the human being is not new. Stories exist even before the discovery of writing and today there are plenty of prizes and awards dedicated to the best writers. However, narrative language is not always the right one to achieve an objective. And it is at this point where the term is born UXwriting.

UX writing is the writing technique dedicated to improving the user experience. It seems like a simple term at first glance, but the truth is that it is often confused with two similar terms: copywriting and microwriting.

UX writing is writing that focuses on the user experience, on their interactions with a web/app and on their emotions during the process.

Copywriting, microwriting and UX writing

Copywriting is dedicated to the writing of advertising texts and their texts encourage the purchase of a product or service, for example, all the texts of an advertising graphic. Microwriting fulfills the same function, but in a minimal way. For example, a claim of an advertisement. Of these two terms, microwriting is currently applied to the description of products in E-commerce, where sometimes the product sheets are not very large and small texts or words have to be adapted to fit on those sheets.

However, UX writing is totally dedicated to usability, focusing its texts on the necessary information that a user of a website or app needs to make their journey simple. Thus, UX writing directly influences the purchase process but not persuasion. We just want to make the purchase much easier for the user through texts and, if we succeed, increase our sales.

However, everything complements each other: thanks to the set of copies that persuade the user, the microcopy that summarizes the objective of a brand and UX writing that guides the user in a memorable digital experience, we achieve the satisfaction of our audience.

Becoming a good copywriter does not only depend on the application of specific writing techniques. There are four fundamental aspects that you have to take into account to ensure that users who visit your website have a unique experience.

Where is UX writing applied?

The truth is that this writing technique must be present on all existing digital platforms, from previously exposed web pages to apps. In the latter, the use of a more direct and always responsive UX writing must be guaranteed, that is, that it has the ability to adapt to any device.

Simple techniques to get started in UX writing

1. Eliminate redundancy: try to review the text you write and eliminate redundant terms.

2. Be positive: try to emphasize what the user can achieve rather than what they cannot do.

3. Do not invent: uses standard words to make them understandable to the user.

4. Use numbers: the numerical value is easy for human eyes to scan.

5. Skip unnecessary words: write instructions and messages accurately.

6. Be consistent: the use of consistent language will help the user better understand the meaning.

7. Avoid “the user”, use “your”: using the first person will personalize the way you speak.

8. Use “I”: use “me” when the user wants to tell the system what to do. It will give a feeling of personal interaction.

9. User Oriented: Make sure communication with the user is clear and concise.

10. Avoid all caps: all caps text can be difficult to read and scan. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU’RE SCREAMING!

11. Use short words: short, simple words are easy to scan and quick to understand.

12. Avoid jargon and technical terms or difficult acronyms: use terms your users are comfortable with.

13. Reduce ambiguity: in many cases there are symbols or actions that are not well understood by themselves. A good copy can solve the user’s doubts.

14. Customize: Take advantage when the user visits private areas or emails to personalize the text. Include your name and build trust.

15. Write in the present and actively.

16. Above all, put yourself in the client’s shoes.
